The official name for the NASA Meatball is Insignia. This famous symbol dates back to 1959. The sphere represents the planet, and the stars represent space. The red v-shaped wing represents aeronautics and the orbit around the word NASA - space travel. It was the most common symbol until 1975 when the Worm was introduced as a more modern logo. In 1992 the Worm was retired, and the Meatball became the common agency symbol.
