Earthrise is the iconic photo taken in lunar orbit by astronaut William Anders aboard Apollo 8. It was December 24, 1968. And the first time a rocket with a crew had ever orbited the moon. The image made front-page news worldwide when it was released on December 30, 1968. Astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell were also on the mission and witnessed this bright blue and white marble rising over the moon's horizon. Earthrise is still one of the most influential and powerful images today.
